Torrevieja

Torrevieja and its surrounding areas have some of the most beautiful beaches to be found in Europe. These beaches have earned sixty-seven European Blue Flags and vary from secluded sand dunes with magnificent pinewood picnic areas to long flat sandy beaches extending for many kilometers. On the south side of the town these beaches change to breathtakingly beautiful secluded sandy bays overlooked by towering cliffs.

Playa La Zenia, Capitain Playa and Campoamor

These are the closest beaches to the house. They are wide and sandy with water sports being very popular especially at La Zenia during the Summer. The picture is of Capitain Playa at Cabo Roig.

Playa Campo and Playa Els Ortigles (between Torrevieja and Guardamar

This is a beautiful long stretch of unspoilt coastline just north of Torrevieja. Behind the sandy beach are sand dunes. Lunch can be eaten at the tapas bar on the beach. Sunbeds and umberellas are available for hire.

Santa Pola - lively fishing port

Famous as a finishing port since Roman times, Santa Pola is now popular with holidaymakers for its beautiful sandy beaches. They do not suffer from the chock-a-block feel of some of the bigger resorts and are protected from easterly winds by the lighthouse-topped cape, 3 km north east of town.

Guardamar del Segura - pine forests and dunes

Topped by the ruins of a 13th century castle, this small town is surrounded by scenic beaches and sand dunes planted with pines, palms and eucalyptus trees. Guardamar has five long, sandy beaches. The two nearest the town centre, La Roqueta and Playa Centro have all the usual facilities - umbrellas, sun-loungers and pedalos, etc.. However, if you fancy escaping from holidaymakers for an hour or two, head north to Playa Vivers. The pretty beach is uncommercialised and uncrowded, lined by a row of quaint fishermen's cottages. The beach is backed by the Dunas de Guardamar, a beautiful shady forest of pines and palms, perfect for picnics.

La Manga and the Mar Menor - fun aquatic playground

The Mar Menor (literally 'the minor sea') is separated from the Mediterranean by a thin strip of land about 21 km long, known as La Manga. This has the effect of turning th Mar Menor into a huge swimming pool with warm, calm waters - the water temperatue rarely drops below 18 degress C, even in winter. There are all kinds of watersports on offer from sailing to diving and windsurfing, as well as huge stretches of fine sand for dedicated sun-worshippers. The area around the lighthouse, Cabo de Palos, is renowned for its excellent diving. There are several diving schools nearby including the club Islas Hormigas. Manga Surf - this frindly school with English speaking instructors offers private windsurfing and sailing lessons at affordable prices. If you already know what you are doing, you can just hire the boards or catamarans, or opt for a less technical paddle about in a canoe or pedalo. (Gran Via, exit 23). The high concentration of salt and iodine in the Mar Menor is said to be highly beneficial to anyone suffering fron skin complaints.
