CartagenaFounded by the Carthaginian general Hasdrubal, Cartagena was conquered by Rome in the year 209 BC by Publuis Cornelius Scipio, who gave it the name of Cartago Nova (New Carthage ) Of the glory attained by this Roman town, a good many witnesses can be found in the municipal Archeological Museum and, above all, in the Torre Ciega, a splendid funerary monument from Roman times. Vandals and Arabs devastated the town various times, practically destroying it. After the conquest, the city recovered its original grandeur and its very ancient Roman castle, which was then rebuilt and enlarged. Bit by bit on the hills in the city, mighty fortifications were being built, turning the port of Cartagena into one of the best defended of the whole of the Iberian peninsula. In this sea side town par excellence, outstanding examples of religious architecture are by no means lacking – we have, for instance, the church of Santa Maria de Gracia, where the beautiful carving of the Virgin del Rosell (14th century) is to be found, not to mention figures for the Easter processions, the work of Capux and Benlliure, and other outstanding pieces. |

This gigantic lake with still and smooth waters, dotted with tiny islands, has round it’s shores a multitude of singular landscapes. Frequently the holiday-home estate, imaginative and aesthetic, contributes decisively to the beauty of the setting. The warm waters of the Mar Menor, rich in mineral salts and iodine, offer a simple and natural relief for people suffering from circulatory problems or rheumatism. Healthy baths, radiant sun, aquatic sports, agreeable surrounding sand select cuisine are some of the chief attractions of this area. All of these attractions can be enjoyed the whole year round, given the constantly mild temperatures. Amongst the gastronomical specialties is arroz caldero, a dish typical of the local fishermen, with fresh fish, rice and garlic. Cooked in iron stewpots over wood fires, the fishermen used to prepare this meal on returning from their fishing trips out to sea. |

The works of Francisco Salzillo (Murcia)The Neo-classical niches of the Church of Jesus ,which is situated on a pleasant little square, serve as a frame for a significant sample of the works of the best known Murcian sculptor. Francisco Salzillo. He was a prolific sculptor of religious themes, of Neapolitan decent, who gave to his figures an idealized realism and Baroque movement with very personal nuances. In the aforementioned church, one can admire the Prayer in the garden of Gethsemane, the Lady of Sorrows the Fall Saint Veronica as well as the remaining statues of the Stations of the Cross, which are carried through the streets of Murcia during the Easter processions. Without a doubt , among the most noted works of the Macesuro are the 828 figures which his celebrated Christmas crib ,also exhibited in the Church of Jesus ; formed from modest materials( wood, clay, paper mache) ,exude simplicity and feeling. Apart from the statues in the museum, the cathedral and other churches in Murcia also possess sculptures by Salzillo ,some of them thought to be his best works. |

Sanctuary of the Fuensanta (Murcia)The Sanctuary of the Virgin of the Fuensanta patroness of Murcia since 1731 ,lies only a few kilometers from that city. It owes its name to a gushing spring, the Fuen Santa (holy spring) which rises close to the sanctuary and whose water shave been considered miraculous since the middle ages. Already then Our Lady of the Fuensanta was venerated by large numbers of believers, according to the Capitulary files of the City council of Murcia . the present hermitage, simply . built , dates from the 17th century, shortly after the famous court comedy actress Maria Francesca de Garcia has bequeathed all her possessions to the Fuensanta .Abandoning her career and glory she fled the world to lead a life of penance and godliness until her death. The well known actress and her husband Juan Bautista Gomez, lived from that moment on in a cave close to the holy spring, still known by the name The cave of the comic lady. Like her, her husband ,too, gave more or less his complete fortune to improve and enrich the hermitage . The image of the Virgin – dark in countenance also dates from the 17th Century. |
